Today is a very important day in Canada. Canadians are voting in a federal election. Canada has three levels of government; municipal, provincial and federal. Municipal government refers to local mayors and councilors. And each province and territory has its own Premier and provincial representatives. The federal government looks after national issues, issues that affect the entire country. In a federal election, voters choose candidates to represent them in the House of Commons in Ottawa. And the leader of the winning party becomes the leader of Canada, the Prime Minister. In the weeks leading up to the voting day, voters can get information about the people running for office by listening to the radio, reading newspapers and flyers, by checking internet sites, attending local debates and speaking with the candidates at their riding offices. If you are a Canadian citizen and you are 18 or over, you can vote. In fact it is one of the most important obligations of the citizens in a democracy! It is important to find out what the issues are and what each candidate will do if elected. Well, I've made up my mind and now it's time for me to go to my local polling station and cast my ballot.
