Episode 21 - Be Careful Out There!

As children are busy figuring out what to wear for Halloween, it’s a good idea to make some plans for a safe night of fun. It usually gets dark pretty early at this time of year so it’s important that children can be seen by drivers. Small flashlights or reflectors can increase their visibility. There is safety in numbers too. Children shouldn’t go trick-or-treating alone. Young children should be accompanied by adults and older children should go together in groups. Most people welcome children on Halloween, but it’s a good idea to tell children not to go into strangers’ homes. It’s customary for children to stay outside of the house with their treat bags. Some people do not want to be a part of Halloween. The easiest way to know which homes are participating in the evening is to look for a lighted jack-o-lantern in the window or beside the door. If a house is completely dark, it means that the people inside don’t want children to knock on their doors. Warn children not to dash across the streets in their excitement and to wear masks and costumes that they can move around in safely. Children should also check with parents to make sure that the treats that they have been given are okay to eat. Packaged candies are fine but unfortunately fruit and homemade treats can be a problem. You should only give them to and accept them from people you know and trust.
